Hair Loss in Middle East Reasons are Many, Not Just Genetics

Most men and women in the Middle East suffer from hair loss, which experts say is due to the extreme weather and pollution typical of the region. The higher salt content in water is also cited as another reason for the increasing cases of hair loss among people in the Middle East.

However, recent reports also suggest that there are many other reasons for hair loss including stress, dehydration, diet or thyroid.

According to Trichologist Mike Ryan, a hair expert in Dubai, there are about 50 reasons for hair loss, which could include stresses from daily life, poor diet and thyroid problems (mostly among women) and genetics.

Experts believe that hair loss due to changing climate conditions and other external factors could be prevented by adopting appropriate measures. For example, if you believe the hair loss is caused by hard water, you may use a shower filter that will cut out the calcium, chlorine and silica in the water from getting to your hair.

Hair follicles need constant nutritional supply to regain their health. They should also have proper moisture level to maintain the healthy growth of the follicles. To beat the dry weather, you must drink plenty of water and apply moisturizing oils on your scalp. Dyeing and coloring are detrimental to hair, according to skin care experts.

Experts suggest you may use hair dye once in three months. While choosing the dye you must ensure that they do not contain carcinogenic chemicals.

Lack of vitamins, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D, results in hair loss. Iron and protein are also essential for hair. A good meal rich in protein, iron and vitamins at the start of the day can help your hair grow fully. Regular intake of egg, green leafy vegetables, fruits and milk should improve hair loss in men and women.

Hair loss has become a major concern among women, more than gaining weight, according to a recent survey by Inversion Femme, an anti-ageing supplement manufacturer. About 67 per cent of respondents reported losing hair was more worrying than the 45 per cent who identified weight gain as their top health issue.

The survey was conducted among 100 women from Dubai and Abu Dhabi between the ages of 25 and 60 included Emiratis, Asian and Western expats.

Hair loss that occurs due to genetic reasons is not curable. Though there are medications that help regain hair growth, they do not offer complete solution. Moreover, these drugs also cause side effects. Propecia, a widely used to treat androgenic alopecia, has been proved unhealthy as it causes several complications including sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer among users. Following this revelation, FDA recently ordered for the label change of the drug.

Hair transplants are emerging as the safest and the best way to deal with hair loss. As hair restoration procedures advance, patients suffering from hair loss are given a variety of hair transplant options that meet their requirements. The most popular among them is the Neograft that uses follicular unit extraction technique. It is the safest because it does not leave any scar on the scalp.
