Men: No Hair Transplant? How to Hide Thinning Hair

Men who suffer from hair loss are typically seen (and especially in the media) as either extremely attractive for their bald head (think Vin Diesel) or ridiculed for their scalp showing through and the patchy look hair loss brings (think Prince William).

Because of this, many men opt to hide under a hat, shave their heads bald anyways, or grit their teeth and move on from the dilemma. Luckily, for some men, the problem can be solved with a hair transplant surgery, where donor follicles of hair are taken from a healthy area of the scalp (typically the back of the head) and surgically implanted into the problem areas.

Whether its lack of funds, or an unwillingness to take these measures, for some men, especially those just starting to show signs of thinning hair, there are some tricks that they can do, or ask their hairdresser to do, to help hide the thinning hair while they can.

A recent Modern Salon article looked at a few of these options.

These tips for hair dressers included the idea that keeping the hair shorter on the male, helps to make it look less like its thinning.

Another tip - which sort of goes against the grain of what we preach about keeping your hair healthy by not overusing styling products and tools, includes getting a better product for the hair that is designed specifically for creating a thicker look to the hair - like a controlling cream or styling glaze and then blow drying it into the customers hair.

A common mistake is using products that create a lot of shine in the hair, which can make it look wet, and bring the scalp forward to emphasize the balding - rather than hide it.

Other than the heat from a blow dryer, men typically aren't using flat irons and curling rods, but choosing the right tools, like hair brushes are key to getting the right results with hair. The article recommends using a wide tooth comb or using fingers for a messy look that can even help fill in the gaps.
