Hair Loss in Men and Women Explained

While alopecia is typically attributed to hormonal imbalance in individuals, a recent article from Arab News highlights some of the other major common causes of hair loss affecting people in the Gulf region.

According to the author of the article, some of the most common causes of hair loss among people staying in this region include stress, poor diet, presence of minerals in desalinated water, thyroid problems, harsh hairstyling techniques, chemical treatments in hair styling.

The report suggests that most hair loss can be treated through natural means – by following healthy lifestyle and eating nutritious food rich in vitamins and minerals. Hair cells grow quicker than practically any other cells in the body, so they require continuous supply of nutrients. The most important of them is proteins, because hair itself is made of proteins, and to continue the growth, you need to have protein in your diet that can also give iron and zinc to help your hair grow.

Meat and fish are rich source of proteins. While most non-vegetarians in-take protein-rich food, it is not absorbed adequately. Protein deficiency is common in vegetarians. To cope up with the hair loss induced by lack of nutrients, you must include regular protein- and vitamin-rich food in your diet. Protein supplements and multi-vitamin tablets are also prescribed for patients who suffer from poor absorption of nutrients.

Another natural way to prevent hair loss is massaging. Regular massaging on scalp will help reduce hair fall induced by stress and toxins on the scalp. Traditionally, hair massaging is done prior to washing your hair; but if you are not washing your hair daily, you may do that before you go to sleep. Applying oil while massaging gives better results as it causes the nutrient-rich hair oil to enter the follicles quickly and nourish the hair roots.

According to Dr. Donohue as told to The Town Talk, most common causes of hair loss in women are iron deficiency, renal disease, thyroid illnesses and overdose of vitamin A. by including green leafy vegetables and taking iron supplements, they can reduce the risk of hair loss to an extent. OTC drugs like Rogaine are also found to be effective in treating hair loss in women.

Experts also warn that the use of complex hair styling techniques such as hair weaving and tattoos do more harm to your hair than good. Hair weaving involves the process of gluing artificial hair on to the scalp. The glue causes damage to adjacent hair follicles, resulting in more severe hair loss.

Hair loss treatments options are many. Some of them include drugs, hair transplants and more advanced stem cell therapies. Several new technologies are being implemented in the treatment of baldness. Robotic assisted hair restoration techniques are also gaining popularity.
