Exploring the Causes and Treatment Options of Androgenic Alopecia

Every person will experience some degree of hair loss in their life. Most of these could be natural. It is a well established fact that a healthy person loses 50-60 strands of hair every day. The hair re-grows naturally to replace the missing hair. When this balance is disturbed and more hairs are shed than are regrown, the person suffers from hair loss or alopecia.

The most common type of baldness in men and women is caused due to genetic reasons. Known as androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness), this hair loss becomes visible in men and women in their 30s or 40s.

Hormones play a significant role in the growth of hair. Hormonal changes by far can impact hair loss in both men and women. Androgenic alopecia is caused due to the imbalance in androgen DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone. This results in thinning of hair throughout the head without being in any specific pattern. This type of hair loss results when the person has hair follicles that have a greater number of Androgen receptors for the DHT to attach to. This is the component that is inherited through the genes.

Androgenic alopecia is curable to an extent. The success rate depends on how early you identify your hair loss and the reason behind it. Skin therapists suggest you should start your treatment in your 20s if you are susceptible to androgenic alopecia, meaning if any of your immediate relatives suffer from this disease, you should start the treatment as early as possible.

The drugs that treat androgenic alopecia block the production of DHT in your body. These are anti-androgenic medicines, so they are likely to cause certain side effects in men as reported in some of the recent articles. For example, Propecia, a well-known drug to treat androgenic alopecia is likely to cause high-grade prostate cancer in males. The FDA has notified healthcare professionals that the Warnings and Precautions section of Propecia include new safety information about the increased risk of being diagnosed with a more serious form of prostate cancer (high-grade prostate cancer).

Experts believe that future treatments of androgenic alopecia may use gene therapy. The treatment will involve altering the constitution of genes to prevent the follicles from being affected by DHT.

Hair restoration techniques are growing in popularity because they are the safest methods to treat androgenic alopecia without causing any side effects. There are several techniques to restore your hair. Most popular of them include follicular unit extraction and laser therapy. Of late, stem cell therapy is being explored as an effective treatment for androgenic alopecia.
